My wonderful physician is Alan Smith, MD.
My wonderful physician is Alan Smith, MD. One of the ways in which he helped me was to deal with my genetic risk factor. By being a member of MDVip, I had a genetic profile ordered with my blood work in 2011. It was discovered that I was heterozygous for Factor V Leiden, which means I have an increased risk for blood clots. In looking at this with Dr. Smith, we discussed whether I should be taking Evista for strengthening my bones, since a side effect is the same increased risk. Dr. Smith consulted with a hematologist colleague, and it was suggested that I might be a candidate for the Reclast infusion rather than Evista which also gives protection against osteoporosis. Within a few days I had an appointment with the hematologist, and it was determined that I met the criteria for the procedure. The following week I had my first Reclast infusion. So within the time of our office visit to go over the diagnostic tests to the time of my infusion took less than a month. This option may not have been available to me if Dr. Smith weren't able to spend the time working with me. By having my regular scans done, it was shown that my bone density has improved. In a usual medical practice my risk factor probably would not have been discovered; and if so it would have taken months to have my first treatment.
I feel Dr. Smith is concerned for me as a person, and not just a patient. He has also chosen an excellent staff to work with him. Tony & Elaine have been with Dr. Smith for years, and they are also caring people. They make a friendly, hard-working team looking out for the best care for their patients. I'm so pleased to be a part of Dr. Smith's medical family!
