I had a genetic profile ordered by Dr. Smith MDVIP-affiliated physician in 2011. It was discovered that I was heterozygous for Factor V Leiden, which means I have an increased risk for blood clots. In looking at this with my physician, we discussed whether I should be taking Evista for strengthening my bones, since it may increase my risk for blood clots. Dr. Smith consulted with a hematologist colleague, and it was suggested that I might be a candidate for the Reclast infusion rather than Evista which also gives protection against osteoporosis. Within a few days I had an appointment with the hematologist, and it was determined that I met the criteria for the procedure. The following week I had my first Reclast infusion. So within the time of our office visit to go over the diagnostic tests to the time of my infusion took less than a month. This option may not have been available to me if my Dr. Smith wasn't able to spend the time working with me. Through the regular scans I’ve had done, it’s been shown that my bone density has improved. In a usual medical practice, my risk factor probably would not have been discovered; and if so, it would have taken months to have my first treatment.
