A patient should always be able to say that they have confidence, trust and respect in their physicians medical advice. A few years ago my mother, also a MDVIP member, celebrated her 90th birthday. We had a large party for her, and Dr. Kalonaros was invited. My Mother had a wonderful time and even danced with all the men, including Dr. Kalonaros, who attended. Two days later she had severe peritonitis of her large intestine. We had to rush her to the emergency room at 1AM. The gastric surgeon said we should just agree to give her morphine to make her comfortable. At that time, I did not realize the implications of administering morphine! Thankfully, Dr. Kalonaros met us at the hospital soon after our arrival. His words were “ If your mother was going back to a nursing home and had nothing to live for ....then yes give her the morphine. However, your mother lives with you, and you and your family take her on trips, cruise and etc. She deserves a chance”.....So I agreed to the surgery. After the surgery, Dr. Kalonoros personally brought me into recovery to see her. The surgeon said if she doesn’t wake up in 3 days he wanted permission to “pull that plug”. The recovery room nurse said , “doctor she already woke up, and we sedated her again.” The surgeon seemed shocked. Dr. Kalonoros nodded to me. My Mother recovered and lived another three years, and died of congestive heart failure at 93. My trust, confidence and respect in Dr. Kalonaros’s advice gave me the pleasure of 3 additional years with my Mother. This is just one of the many stories I could share. Dr. Kalonaros’s kindness and caring was obvious even before he became a member of MDVIP. I will never forget his words from that awful night, and there can never be enough words to express how Dr . Kalonoros has positively Impacted my family’ s lives since our first visit in 1994.
