My favorite mentor in my internal medicine residency once stated that 90% of the diagnosis can be made from the patient’s history. I often think of that as I talk with patients to review their symptoms or when discussing a strategy for them. This interaction requires more time with a patient, which I believe has become very difficult to come by in more traditional medical practices. In my MDVIP-affiliated practice, I have more time to develop long-standing relationships with my patients, which is an aspect of my 30 years in internal medicine practice that I have loved! 

When I entered the University of Rochester Medical School, the curriculum had just been reorganized with a patient-centered focus. That means I started working with individuals earlier in my education, allowing me to apply theories and facts to real situations. I learned to consider patients’ priorities, knowledge and experiences, and the influence they can have on medical outcomes. I try every day to make that connection with patients to help with a diagnosis, treatment recommendations or when discussing chronic conditions.

I chose to start an MDVIP-affiliated practice to add another dimension to my care, wellness and prevention. The Wellness Program emphasizes this approach. New tests and information are considered by MDVIP’s physician board and shared with affiliated physicians. The organization has used an evidence-based approach for which studies have shown more positive outcomes with the personalized care offered in MDVIP-affiliated practices.
