TODAY Show Discusses MDVIP Fat IQ Survey

The TODAY Show recently featured the MDVIP/IPSOS Fat IQ survey in a clip on choosing the right diet. Hosts Savannah Guthrie and Willie Geist discussed the results with Dr. Drew Ramsey, a psychiatrist from Columbia University.

In the survey, most respondents scored a failing grade when it came to basic nutrition, fat and weight management knowledge. (See how you score on our FatIQ Quiz.)

Dr. Ramsey says people get confused about basic dieting questions because there are so many different diets and experts.

“People are wondering: Do I focus on carbs? Do I focus on fats?” Dr. Ramsey says. “What you find is that American’s are kind of split. About a third of folks in the survey said low-fat diets are the best for health, and about a third said high-fat diets are the best for health. So, a real difference. What we see is Americans feel they know what they do, but the majority failed this nutrition test.”

The Today Show focused on explaining the difference in five popular diets: Intermittent Fasting, Ketogenic/Atkins, Paleo, Mediterranean and Weight Watchers.

MDVIP’s Fat IQ survey, which was conducted in late May and early June, 2018, showed that 82 percent of American adults weigh more than their ideal weight. A similar percentage claim they have the knowledge to eat the way they think they should but 85 percent either don’t underestimate or don’t know how many calories they need to burn to lose weight.
